Program #9 - Interview with author Lily Koppel Listen to program

Once upon a time, I really wanted to write books. Dark, rough covered ones whose binding cracked on opening. Books that would pull on your hand with their weight. I wanted a pair of reading glasses, an old typewriter, an endless plotline, and a book with my name on the spine.

Meeting Lily Koppel is bumping into that lovely daydream like an old friend on the street. Up a slender, ancient staircase to the fifth floor loft where she writes, Lily offered me wine and stories about how she wrote the book that took her from New York Times Clerk to Author of Book. The fairytale opens when Koppel’s Nancy Drew instincts took over on sighting a dumpster filled with old trunks outside her apartment building at 98 Riverside Drive. Inside, she found a journal filled with blue cursive, the pathway to her first novel, and the very best tour guide a young artist in New York could find.

It’s enough to make me run for my reading glasses and typewriter again.
