Program #6 - Interview with classical pianist Simone Dinnerstein. Listen to program

This is the amazing, incredible story of the amazing incredible Simone Dinnerstein:

She left Julliard. In London where she met her husband. Initially, they bonded over Glenn Gould's version of Bach's Goldberg Variations. Her career as a concert pianist did not take off. When she found out she was pregnant, she decided to take on the Goldberg Variations herself. They are sometimes referred to as Mount Everest. She then recorded the Goldberg Variations in concert herself. She then released the recording herself. (This is not indie rock, folks, this idea had never hit the classical world). She suddenly found herself playing concerts all over the world.

Simone is a woman of intense passion and intelligence. She's broken every rule, followed her heart, and turned the classical world on its ear. I talked with Simone the day after I saw her play an intimate concert in New York City. Her father, painter Simon Dinnerstein, talked with me for a moment after this show. He had caught me trying to wipe tears off my face while Simone played. It was such a pleasure to meet such a tremendously talented, disciplined, thoughtful musician. "I'm going to practice much more," is what I told myself after we talked.

Many thanks to Telarc, Gramophone Magazine, and Simone herself.
