Mary Gauthier

It is impossible to not admire Mary Gauthier for her honesty, her grit, and her guts. At the age of 40, Mary walked away from a number of successful restaurants to head to Nashville to pursue her dream of songwriting. Though Mary has written with honesty and humor about everything from being human, being gay to being an alcoholic, her latest collection of songs proves that there is always further to go. I found myself truly shaken up by The Foundling, Mary's collection of songs about her struggle being an orphan and her search for her birth mother. Mary is so open - about her passion and dedication for writing, and her quest to unravel the mysteries in her own story. She has more guts than just about anybody I know. With her work, Mary has faced the fears which we all face in our daily lives with her strength and laughter, written her way through darker places than many of us will ever encounter. I am best served to let Mary tell her own story here, as she does in this interview and in her music; suffice, I hope, to say that I am cheering, full of admiration, shaking my head at my own puny little guts.

I spoke with Mary in a hotel in London, where she had visited the gym regularly and I had not at all, and where we had excellent Chinese food nearby. Listen to this interview to see how Flannery O'Connor, Buddhism, football happy dances, and one woman's search for her birth mother all make perfect, beautiful sense in one very amazing woman.
