Matthew Ryan Just Might Save The World

I can't tell you how much I love talking with Matthew Ryan. I love his music, absolutely, and the cinematic way he frames our everyday experiences. I love the way he's been working on records for ten years, for A&M or on his own label, always championed by luminaries, always with the same integrity. Sometimes, you listen to music and you imagine the person behind it -- perhaps they have a temper, burn toast most mornings, are horrible at returning phone calls, drink too much Dr Pepper. Matthew Ryan is the person you hope is behind his songs, perhaps even better than you could have hoped. Always gentle and thoughtful, he spoke to me about his blue collar approach to writing, fatherhood, and the importance of the demise of celebrity to the evolution of the whole world. In a world over full with of the moment idols, soda pop philiosophy and mass manufactured identity, it sure is nice to talk to someone about their committment to honesty and go home with the thought in your pocket that you know someone who is writing songs to be helpful to this good world.
